During the drive that prepares the winning touchdown, Vaki ran for 5, 12, and 10 yards. The Lions finished with 230 total yards on the ground, including 164 yards after the break. Facing an aggressive and blitz-heavy defense, their ability to continue advancing by running limited the need to constantly depend on long pass sequences.
Campbell Demands Reliability in Pass Protection
For Dan Campbell, the evaluation of Vaki does not boil down to the runs. The coach had also asked his running back to be present in pass protection. “He gained enormous confidence today,” Campbell said after the victory, as reported by DAZN.
If Vaki confirms his reliability to protect Goff, the Lions will be able to more easily keep him on the field when a pass is planned.
Evaluating the Future of the Detroit Backfield
This performance opens a possibility, without guaranteeing a new permanent sharing of carries. The 65 yards of Vaki represent more than his entire production on the ground before this match: he must now demonstrate that this contribution can be repeated. It would also be premature to directly attribute the explosiveness of Gibbs to the rest obtained.
The match marked the first defeat for Minnesota. For Detroit, the next step consists of verifying that Vaki can reproduce these gains, protect his quarterback, and remain reliable in important moments.
