Hans Vanaken Approaches Milestone 500th D1A Appearance Against Anderlecht
Club Brugge captain Hans Vanaken is set to make his 500th appearance in the Belgian top flight, the Jupiler Pro League, in an upcoming fixture against RSC Anderlecht. The milestone match places the midfielder alongside historic figures in Belgian football longevity, coming 13 years after his debut in the division.
From Lommel United to the Parc Astrid Debut
Vanaken made his debut in the Belgian D1A when he was signed by Lommel United from D2 and immediately inserted into the starting lineup by manager Peter Maes for a match against Anderlecht at the Stade Constant Vanden Stock. DHnet and Lavenir.net reported that the tall Limburg native scored two goals—a header and a left-footed strike—to lead the visiting side to a 2–3 victory. That performance introduced a player known for a calm demeanor and high-level tempo control.
Vanaken Secures Five League Titles During Decade at Club
Following two seasons at Lokeren, where he won the Belgian Cup in 2014, Vanaken transferred to Club Brugge in the summer of 2015. Over the last decade with the club, he has secured five league titles and won the Belgian Golden Shoe twice, in 2018 and 2019. Across 499 current D1A appearances, records cited by DHnet and Lavenir.net show he has registered 286 victories, 110 draws, and 103 defeats, representing a 57.3% win rate. His most frequent opponent is KRC Genk, against whom he has scored 18 goals in 43 matches. He has played alongside regular starters such as Brandon Mechele, who has featured in 338 matches alongside him, and former teammate Ruud Vormer, who appeared in 226.
Climbing the All-Time D1A Appearance Records
Upon reaching the 500-match threshold, Vanaken will surpass Alex Czerniatynski, who finished his career with 492 appearances, and move past Michel De Wolf (501) and Michel Preud’homme (502). Further up the all-time appearance list are Jan Ceulemans with 519 matches, Olivier Deschacht with 532, Vital Borkelmans with 533, and the all-time appearance record holder Raymond Mommens, who played 614 games in the competition. Vanaken has maintained availability across his career, regularly exceeding 40 matches per season without suffering severe muscular injuries.
Match Schedule and Upcoming Fixtures
Club Brugge continues its domestic campaign and UEFA Champions League commitments, where Vanaken has accumulated 69 career appearances in Europe’s premier club competition. The milestone 500th league fixture arrives as the club prepares for its next series of domestic encounters in the Jupiler Pro League.
