Archives Reveal 1948 Jinhua Basketball Tournament
Archival records preserved in Jinhua show that local organizers hosted a citywide basketball tournament named the “Xianliedao” or Martyrs’ Cup in March 1948, according to historical documents.
While current crowds gather for modern “Zhejiang BA” games, civil records from 78 years ago outline an event originally conceived to honor revolutionary martyrs and encourage physical fitness.
Three Date Changes Before Tip-Off
The organizing committee initially scheduled the tournament for April 10, securing a venue ahead of time, records indicate. Planners pushed the opening back to April 24 after realizing the provincial sports meeting running concurrently in Hangzhou would draw away most players from local government offices and schools.
Archival correspondence does not specify why organizers shifted the calendar multiple times.
Strict Regulations for 1948 Teams
An official fifteen-article rulebook titled the 1937 Jinhua County Martyrs’ Basketball Championship Regulations permitted any registered civic organization, government agency, military unit, or school team to enter. Brackets divided participants into men’s open, junior high school, elementary school, and women’s divisions, with rosters capped at 10 players for men and 12 for women.
The tournament format used single-loop round-robin play for brackets with fewer than four entries and a knockout stage for larger fields. Standard regulations awarded two points for a win, while women’s matches ending in a draw granted one point to each side with extra periods mandated for tied elimination games.
Tournament Rules Govern Athlete Attire and Protest Procedures
Tournament bylaws required athletes to wear numbered cloth patches on their chests and established a ten-minute grace period before a forfeit was declared. Teams wishing to protest a referee’s decision had to file paperwork within six hours alongside a monetary deposit that administrators confiscated if the protest proved groundless.
The provincial Jinhua People’s Education Museum organized the event, utilizing referees and scorekeepers assigned by the institution under official athletic rules. A physical Martyrs’ Cup remained on public display as the grand prize for the division champions.
Broad Civic Support Across Jinhua
Local commercial houses including the Commercial Press, Chung Hwa Book Company, and local cloth shops also contributed supplies and financial assistance.
