The Milwaukee Brewers missed their first opportunity to clinch their maiden World Series title after dropping Game 4 to the Tampa Bay Rays 3-4 in 12 innings at Tropicana Field, SPORT1 reported. Ben Williamson delivered the walk-off single in the 12th inning to drive in Nick Fortes and level the best-of-seven series at 3-1.
Brewers Miss First Match Point in Extra Innings
Milwaukee entered the night holding a commanding 3-0 lead in the Fall Classic, standing just three outs away from sweeping the series in Florida. Instead, the visiting side let a late advantage slip away during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Cooper Pratt had given the Brewers a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th inning by launching a solo home run. The momentum vanished immediately in the bottom half of the frame when Tampa Bay’s Jonny DeLuca tied the game with a single before Williamson manufactured the game-winning run.
Rays Extend Series Behind Williamson and DeLuca
Tampa Bay kept its championship hopes alive by executing in high-pressure situations when elimination loomed. That just shows how resilient this team is,
Williamson said after the victory, as quoted by SPORT1. We don’t give up and keep fighting. That was the motto of this series and the entire season.
The franchise, which previously reached the World Series in 2008 and 2020, now forces a Game 5 while facing a daunting historical deficit. No team in Major League Baseball history has successfully overcome a 0-3 deficit in the World Series.
Championship Stakes Shift to Game 5 in Florida
The schedule offers no time for recovery as both clubs return to the field at Tropicana Field in Saint Petersburg for Game 5. The matchup is scheduled for Thursday night at 1:00 AM local time. The Brewers are making only their second World Series appearance in franchise history, matching their lone previous pennant run from 1982. Both Milwaukee and Tampa Bay continue their pursuit of the first World Series title in their respective organizational histories.
