SC Cambuur climbed to tenth place in the Eredivisie standings following a 1-6 victory against Willem II in Tilburg, marking the club’s largest-ever win in the top flight of Dutch football, according to reports from NOS. The turnaround in Leeuwarden coincides directly with a tactical shift in the forward line, where 24-year-old Austrian striker Nicolas Binder has secured a regular starting role during an ongoing six-match unbeaten run.
From Fourth Choice to the Starting Lineup
The trajectory of the Friesian club changed after a difficult start to the 2026/2027 Eredivisie campaign. Under trainer Johan Plat, the team began the season in August with four consecutive defeats, including a 0-4 loss to Excelsior. During those opening fixtures, young forwards Skye Vink and Sami Bouhoudane featured centrally in the attack.

The arrival of Nicolas Binder from Austria Klagenfurt in 2025 initially brought high expectations that went unmet during the previous campaign in the second tier. Binder made only 13 appearances in the Eerste Divisie—predominantly as an eleven-time substitute—without scoring a single goal. Both the club and the player planned for a summer transfer window departure, but a move failed to materialize, leaving Binder to report for pre-season training in Leeuwarden.
A Sudden Turnaround in Leeuwarden
Once Binder earned his first start of the season against Telstar, Cambuur found sustained momentum. In Tilburg, the forward contributed his fourth and fifth goals of the Eredivisie season during the record-breaking 1-6 win against Willem II, a side struggling following the dismissal of head trainer John Stegeman. Ilyes Hamache, Ismaël Baouf, Rafik El Arguioui, and Jason Ceka also added goals for the visitors.
Reflecting on his sudden surge in form, Binder noted to reporters that every shot appears to find the net at present. “I can’t really explain it,” the striker said, adding that he is currently riding a wave where everything succeeds. Trainer Johan Plat described the Austrian forward as working “like a monster” and praised his current output.
