Eder Sarabia has cut short a planned sabbatical to take charge of an Espanyol side mired in the relegation zone, La Vanguardia reported. The coach signed a contract running through June 30, 2028, stepping into a club sitting in the relegation zone and facing an immediate battle to avoid dropping out of the top flight.
Sarabia’s sudden appointment follows the dismissal of Manolo González, whose 107-match tenure ended abruptly following a 4-3 extra-time defeat to Sestao in the Copa del Rey, sealed by a last-minute goal from the lower-tier side. González had previously guided the Catalan club back to the top division in 2024, but a dismal run yielding only four victories across all of 2026 forced a change in the dugout.
The Sabbatical That Ended
Just months earlier, in May 2026, Sarabia had stepped down from his post at Elche, citing a need to spend more time with his family and handle personal matters after keeping the club afloat. At the time, he stated an intention to remain out of management for several months. That hiatus ended when general sporting director Ramón Rodríguez ‘Monchi’ contacted him while the club celebrated its anniversary outside the RCDE Stadium.
While Monchi evaluated candidates with extensive top-flight resumes, he ultimately opted for a radical tactical shift. Where González built his approach on defensive grit and physical effort, Sarabia arrives preaching an expansive, possession-heavy philosophy centered on high pressing, building from the back, and fluid attacking combinations.
A Radical Tactical Shift for the Pericos
The incoming manager brings a coaching staff featuring Jon López, Jon Moreno, Aitor Unzué, and Álvaro González, a former Espanyol player who played for the club from 2014 to 2017. Together, they inherit a squad struggling for confidence and identity.

Sarabia’s methodology relies heavily on video analysis and tactical autonomy, granting players freedom of decision rather than encumbering them with rigid automatisms. It is an approach that earned praise during his spells at Andorra—owned by Gerard Piqué—and Elche, where he secured promotion to the top tier in the 2024–25 campaign.
Immediate Interim Leadership at La Cerámica
Sarabia will not take charge of the team for Friday’s league fixture against Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica, EFE reported. Instead, reserve team coach Sergio García will manage the side on an interim basis and handle pre-match media duties.

García may also remain on the bench for the subsequent fixture against Deportivo, as Sarabia serves a two-match touchline ban carried over from last season.
Questions Facing the New Manager
Monchi is scheduled to address reporters to explain the decision behind the coaching change and outline the club’s strategy for halting its sporting decline. With Espanyol marking its anniversary amid mounting pressure from the stands, the immediate challenge for the new technical staff is translating a high-risk, possession-based philosophy into points before the relegation gap widens further.
