Seven African countries have secured qualification places in archery for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Dakar, Senegal. Algeria, CΓ΄te d’Ivoire, Egypt, Guinea, Mauritius, South Africa, and Tunisia are set to send athletes to the multi-sport event, which marks the first time the continent will host an Olympic competition.
Archery Contingent and Qualification Breakdown
A total of 38 nations across the globe have qualified athletes to compete on the shooting line during the Youth Olympic Games, which run from October 31 to November 13, 2026. The continent’s seven qualifying nations form part of a 64-athlete field split evenly between 32 male and 32 female competitors under the age of 18.
Events will take place at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio. While powerhouse nations such as Egypt and Tunisia continue to anchor podium finishes at continental competitions that now draw roughly 17 nations, the Dakar Games represent a milestone for the sport’s regional growth.
Physical Demands and Training Rigor
Archery requires precise physical stability and balance rather than speed, according to archer Awa Sompare. Competitors face targets placed at an official distance of 70 meters, aiming for a yellow center measuring 12 centimeters across to secure the maximum score of 10 points.
Time constraints add pressure to each shot. Athletes are allotted 40 seconds per arrow during competition, while direct elimination matches require a competitor to reach six set points to advance. Bacary ManΓ© emphasized the extensive preparation required for high-level shooting, noting that competitors regularly train by shooting between 100 and 200 arrows per day to diagnose and correct mechanical errors using binoculars and repetition.
