Malmo residents Fredrik Nilsson and Emil Ohlsson are attempting to reclaim the world record for the longest continuous table tennis ball rally, facing a target of more than 17 hours and 15 minutes in a live-broadcasted event from the SVT building in Malmo.
Chasing the Record at the SVT Building in Malmo
The record attempt, scheduled to begin on Thursday at 19:00 local time, shifts the challenge into a public arena. The pair, known as “The spin duo,” have held the table tennis ball rally world record three times previously.
However, two Dutch players surpassed the Malmo duo’s former mark of 17 hours and 8 minutes by an additional seven minutes two weeks prior. To reclaim the top spot, Nilsson and Ohlsson must sustain a continuous rally exceeding 17 hours and 15 minutes.
“Now we want to take this back and do it for perhaps the last time,” Fredrik Nilsson said. “We’ll see, but it’s going to be a bigger deal this time because now the whole Swedish population can actually follow this.”
Broadcast Pressure and Slow-TV Mechanics
The event is being hosted inside the SVT building in Malmo and broadcast live, adopting a format comparable to slow-television endurance programming such as the famous Swedish elk migration stream.
Now there are cameras there where the whole Swedish population is watching,” Emil Ohlsson said. “You don’t want to fail on live television.”
To combat monotony during the multi-hour endurance test, organizers have arranged for station officials inside the SVT building to read questions submitted by viewers through the Duo app. Ohlsson acknowledged the physical and mental toll of the challenge, describing it as a test of sheer stubbornness.
“It’s clear that it’s sickeningly boring. It’s really boring to stand there, but this is a grit record,” Emil Ohlsson said.
Nutritional Strategy for Hours at the Table
Sustaining physical focus through a rally lasting many hours requires strict dietary management. The players have positioned a small standing table directly next to the ping-pong table to handle their nutritional intake.

While the ball remains in motion, both players consume very small amounts of food and drink at a time to maintain their energy levels and prevent dizziness. According to their stated strategy, once the primary milestone of 17 hours and 15 minutes is secured, they intend to continue playing until physical exhaustion forces them to stop.
“Our primary goal is to take a new world record, so over 17 hours and 15 minutes,” Emil Ohlsson said. “But then we will run until we just drop.”
