Russian Ice Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretyak believes upcoming multi-sport events could act as the opening step toward international reentry for Russian national teams. Russian squads have stayed barred from official tournaments under the jurisdiction of the International Ice Hockey Federation since the spring of 2022.
Universiade Slated as First Step to Reentry
Both men's and women's Russian entries are set to make the trip, marking a tangible return to multi-nation competition.
“We are going to the Universiade at the end of January,” Tretyak said. “Both women’s and men’s national teams will go. This is the beginning. I think it all starts with this. This will be the first swallow. And then, let’s hope, a cascade will follow. Hope always dies last, so we are working on this.”
Youth Divisions and Junior Squad Ambitions
Talk of international reintegration has centered heavily on younger age brackets. Roman Rotenberg has expressed hope for the return of the junior and youth national teams of Russia. Rotenberg has publicly asserted that there is no competition in hockey without Russia.
Asked whether international rehabilitation could begin with the under-18 and junior teams returning to official World Championships, Tretyak acknowledged that outcome as a primary institutional goal.

Reports show that three countries are boycotting tournaments with Russia in the event of a return to the IIHF.
