Tennis Legends Take Helm at Federation
The Federación Colombiana de Tenis has appointed Iván Molina, Carlos Salamanca, and Fabiola Zuluaga to its newly formed Comisión Técnica Nacional, according to official federation reports. The newly configured committee convened for its first working session at Club Los Lagartos in Bogotá, where federation leaders and sporting legends outlined strategic initiatives for player development, international tournament pathways, and training infrastructure across Colombia.
Translating Elite Experience Into Action
During the inaugural gathering, federation president Mauricio Lederman emphasized the strategic value of incorporating former competitors who possess deep institutional knowledge of elite play.
Lederman noted that the primary challenge for the administration lies in translating the committee’s high-level insights into practical actions that benefit the future of Colombian tennis. The newly established technical body also includes Wilson Rincón and Fernando Sánchez, rounding out a roster representing multiple generations of the sport.
Circuit Pathways and Global Competitiveness
David Samudio presented the organization’s ongoing development programs to the committee members.
The briefing covered foundational training structures and competitive circuits, specifically highlighting OTF/World Tennis initiatives alongside COSAT U14 and U16 tournaments. Officials also evaluated the progression of national athletes competing in international circuits, tracking the trajectory of Colombian players across both the women’s WTA tour and the men’s ATP tour.
Honoring Decades of National Representation
A central segment of the Bogotá gathering honored several members for their monumental contributions to the sport. Fabiola Zuluaga received recognition for reaching the No. 16 position in the world singles rankings during her professional career, alongside her record 34 appearances representing Colombia in the Billie Jean King Cup. Iván Molina was honored on the 52nd anniversary of the historic 1974 Davis Cup series between Colombia and the United States, which was hosted at the very same Club Los Lagartos venue. Carlos Salamanca was acknowledged for his 20 career appearances representing Colombia in Davis Cup competition.
Collaborative Coaching and Facility Infrastructure
Speaking on her new role within the administration, Fabiola Zuluaga stressed the necessity of maintaining active involvement in national tennis development, advocating for collaborative efforts spanning both executive management and on-court coaching. The committee members subsequently engaged in roundtable discussions to debate structural improvements, tactical training methodologies, and the optimization of federation-run facilities.
Discussions during the committee meeting also focused on the operational status of the federation’s training venues, which are directed by Nelson Cárdenas. The Federación Colombiana de Tenis currently utilizes Club Laverdieri, Club Militar, and Forest Hills as primary hubs to support developmental pathways for rising competitors. Federation officials indicated that leveraging the diverse professional backgrounds present on the Comisión Técnica Nacional will prove essential for shaping competitive outcomes in upcoming international cycles.
