Cuba Defeats Turkey 2-0 in First Baseball5 Match at Youth Olympic Games in Dakar

Cuba’s baseball5 team defeated Turkey 2-0 on Friday at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, securing the first victory in the sport’s history at the event. The match, held at the Complexe Tour de l’Ĺ’uf in the Point E district of Dakar, also marked the first official Olympic competition ever contested on the African continent, according to reporting by SenePlus.

The tournament brings together eight national squads competing for the inaugural baseball5 medals at the youth games. Following Friday’s opening result in Pool A, the Cuban side is scheduled to face the host nation’s team, known as the Lionceaux, on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. local time. Meanwhile, Turkey looks to recover in its next fixture against Chinese Taipei.

Urban Format Brings Gender Parity to Dakar Youth Olympics

Baseball5 functions as an accelerated, urban variation of traditional baseball that eliminates the need for bats or gloves. Developed to emphasize collective play, agility, and adaptability, the discipline can be played across diverse urban environments since its official international launch in 2017.

The competition structure in Dakar features strict roster balance, with 64 total athletes divided evenly across eight teams. Each roster consists of four male and four female competitors, ensuring complete gender parity throughout the tournament. The participating nations span multiple continents, including Cuba, Chinese Taipei, France, Kenya, Mexico, Senegal, Turkey, and a WBSC Refugee Team representing Syria.

Group Standings and Knockout Qualification Rules

The opening preliminary round runs from October 30 through November 1, with each team playing three matches. The eight participating squads are divided into two distinct groups:

  • Pool A: Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Turkey, Senegal
  • Pool B: Mexico, France, Syrian Arab Republic, Kenya

At the conclusion of the round-robin stage, six of the eight teams advance to the final phase. The top-finishing team in each group earns an automatic bye directly into the semifinals. The second- and third-place finishers from each pool will cross over to compete in the quarterfinal round.
