Saint-Bruno Cougars Win Girls Basketball Tournament Final

The Saint-Bruno mini Division A girls basketball team captured the championship banner at the Classique des Cougars tournament, defeating Victoriaville’s GazzigFox in the final.

The mid-October competition ran from Oct. 16 to 18, utilizing the gymnasiums at École secondaire du Mont-Bruno in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville. The weekend event drew 30 clubs across four categories, resulting in 50 total games played throughout the tournament.

For the local mini Division A team featuring players aged 10 to 12, securing the title on home floors carried distinct personal significance. Jillian Morin, who coaches her daughter within the association, expressed pride in her players’ attitude and work ethic.

“This victory represents enormously for me! I am extremely proud of this group of girls, as much for their work as for their attitude throughout the tournament,” Morin said. She noted that the early-season tournament served primarily to build team chemistry and establish good habits rather than chase wins.

“We put the emphasis on effort, teamwork, the pleasure of playing, and support between teammates. As it was an early season tournament, we wanted above all to develop our cohesion and learn to know each other better on the ground,” she added.

Growth of Women’s Basketball Program

François Bibeau, the volunteer president of the Association de basketball de Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, highlighted the broader achievement behind the victory. He pointed to the structural rebuilding of the girls’ program since the return from the pandemic in 2021.

“What makes us the most proud is the development of the women’s section, which was almost nonexistent upon our return from the pandemic in 2021,” Bibeau said.

Bibeau credited the five-year rebuilding effort to volunteers including competitive program director Jessy Girard and instructor Alex Dumouchel, whose groundwork prepared the current generation of players. Notre association mérite un peu de lumière à la suite du grand succès de notre tournoi! Bibeau stated.

Division Champions and Visiting Praise

Across the four tournament brackets, several other squads claimed division banners. The formation mini féminin A des Cougars de Saint-Bruno décroché la bannière des championnes de la Classique 2026. The Tornades de Longueuil defeated Brookwood in the mini Division AA girls final, while Ottawa Next Level captured the mini Division AA boys crown over the Cobras de Boucherville. In the mini Division A boys division, the Association de basketball Persévérance de Joliette team defeated the Cobras de Boucherville.

Visiting organizations praised the logistical execution of the weekend. The Club de basketball GazzigFox posted on social media commending the welcoming environment, while the Association de basketball Persévérance termed the event a successful weekend. Un gain à saveur particulière, Morin noted when asked about the importance of capturing a title at a tournament hosted by their home association.
