A thirty-something man died in hospital following a violent baseball bat assault in La Courneuve, Seine-Saint-Denis, in an apparent act of retaliation linked to a shooting earlier in the day, according to a source close to the investigation.
Violence Erupts Outside a Private Function Room in La Courneuve
The sequence of events began on a Sunday shortly after 6:00 a.m. local time outside a private party venue in La Courneuve, according to police sources. Three individuals arriving in a vehicle opened fire on a man, striking him twice in the leg before their car struck a parked vehicle. The initial shooting victim, a man in his thirties residing in Épinay-sur-Seine according to reporting from Le Parisien, was hospitalized. Authorities confirmed that his life is not in danger.
Following the initial shooting, tension escalated immediately outside the venue. According to police sources, a group leaving the party tracked down one of the individuals suspected in the shooting and assaulted him in the face with a baseball bat. The victim of the retaliatory beating, born in 1994, was rushed to the hospital on Sunday where he was admitted in a state of brain death. The two other suspects linked to the initial shooting managed to flee.
Police Investigation and Unresolved Motives
The Départemental Judicial Police Service of Seine-Saint-Denis has taken charge of the ongoing investigation. Detectives are working to establish whether a direct connection existed between the first victim—who sustained two gunshot wounds to the leg—and the second victim, who succumbed to his injuries after the beating with the baseball bat. A source close to the inquiry noted that investigators have not yet identified a clear motive or established a natural link between the opposing groups, leaving open the possibility of a dispute during the event or a preexisting feud.
