Playing their first fixture following the departure of manager Eugen Polanski, the team under interim coach Jan-Moritz Lichte plunged deeper into a crisis before a crowd of 50,717 spectators.
Defensive Vulnerabilities Undermine Lichte’s Debut
The match showcased a chaotic backline that has now conceded 16 goals across the current campaign. Interim boss Lichte made four changes to the starting XI following a 0–5 defeat in Freiburg, notably handing a start to Florian Neuhaus. The 29-year-old midfielder, whom the club reportedly sought to sell, opened the scoring in the 11th minute. According to match accounts, Neuhaus turned in a shot from Lukas Ullrich, deflecting the ball past Mainz goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow to give the hosts a 1–0 advantage.
