Juan Pablo Varillas secured Peru’s spot in the Davis Cup Qualifiers by winning both of his singles matches in a tense 3-2 series victory over Paraguay at the Jockey Club del Perú in Lima. The 30-year-old tennis player sealed the decisive tie with a straight-sets win, extending his decade-long undefeated run in the international team competition.

The tie came down to the final afternoon after Paraguay leveled the score by taking the doubles rubber and the fourth singles match. Facing Hernando Escurra with the entire series hanging in the balance, Varillas delivered a clinical 6-2, 6-4 performance in front of the home crowd in Lima.
That victory followed a grueling opening day in which Varillas had to engineer a remarkable comeback against Paraguay’s top player, Daniel Vallejo. After dropping the first set 7-5 and falling behind 4-1 in the second-set tiebreak, the Peruvian fought back to take the tiebreak 7-6(8) before closing out the deciding set 6-3.
Reflecting on a Decade-Long Davis Cup Streak
With his two singles wins against Paraguay, Varillas extended his personal winning streak in the Davis Cup to 13 matches, maintaining an undefeated record in the tournament that spans ten years. Speaking to the official Davis Cup media channels, the player emphasized the collective weight of the achievement.
“It is very important for all of us,” Varillas said regarding the team’s ongoing progress. “We come from several years of positive results, with consecutive qualifications for the qualifiers. We haven’t been able to win that stage yet, but we trust that we have an increasingly complete and competitive team to impose ourselves in a series of this type.”
Varillas noted that representing Peru requires an emotional and mental preparation distinct from week-to-week professional circuit events. “Representing your country implies a very great responsibility,” he explained. “Each one faces the tension, the pressure, and that responsibility in a different way, because each person is different.”
Moving On to the Buenos Aires Challenger
Immediately following Davis Cup duty, Varillas traveled to Argentina to compete in the Challenger de Buenos Aires on the clay courts of the Racket Club de Palermo. True to his form in Lima, his opening matches in Buenos Aires featured trademark comebacks.
In his tournament debut, he overcame Argentina’s Tomás Farjat 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(2) after wiping out a double-break deficit in the final set. In the round of 16, he outlasted Bolivia’s Murkel Dellien 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 across a grueling two-hour and 50-minute battle to reach the quarterfinals for the fifth tournament. His run in Argentina ultimately ended in the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 defeat against 21-year-old Uruguayan Joaquín Aguilar Cardozo.
