Amateur football club GVVV has severed ties with head coach Dennis van Beukering and assistant coach Jhon van Beukering with immediate effect following an alleged physical altercation in the player tunnel during a Tweede Divisie match against IJsselmeervogels. The fixture at Sportpark De Westmaat was abandoned at halftime after IJsselmeervogels player Quiermo Dumay reportedly suffered a facial strike, prompting the home side to refuse to continue play.
Tunnel Altercation Abandons Match
Summer Rivalry Boils Over at Halftime
The incident unfolded during a heated Tweede Divisie fixture in Veenendaal, where GVVV held a 0-2 lead at the interval. According to statements from IJsselmeervogels and match reports from regional outlets, the confrontation took place in the tunnel as players and staff headed to the locker rooms. Dumay, who transferred from GVVV to IJsselmeervogels over the summer, identified assistant coach Jhon van Beukering as the individual who struck him.
Manager Details Chaotic Scenes
IJsselmeervogels manager Willem Leushuis detailed the chaotic scene in an interview with RTV Utrecht.
“He says that Jhon van Beukering gave the blow,” Leushuis stated. “He lashed out like a street fighter. It is logical that my players did not want to continue. It was very frightening.”
Police Called as Match is Abandoned
Following the revelation, IJsselmeervogels officials decided against returning to the pitch for the second half. The match officials subsequently confirmed the abandonment of the fixture. As tension spilled off the pitch, police officers were dispatched to Sportpark De Westmaat to separate opposing groups of supporters outside the stadium amid an increasingly hostile atmosphere.
GVVV Board Dismisses Coaching Staff
IJsselmeervogels subsequently filed a formal police report regarding the incident. In response to the unfolding crisis, the GVVV executive board released an official club statement announcing the immediate departure of both Van Beukering brothers from their coaching roles.
“On the basis of the information that is available at this moment, the board has decided that our head coach Dennis van Beukering and assistant-trainer Jhon van Beukering will no longer perform any work for GVVV with immediate effect,” the club announced in a published statement. “In addition, the board has come to the conclusion that there is an insufficient basis to continue the collaboration with them.”
Welfare Concerns Amid Ongoing Inquiries
GVVV leadership also addressed the welfare of the opposing player, offering public support while condemning the broader impact of the confrontation. “Our thoughts go out in the first place to the injured player of IJsselmeervogels,” the club statement continued. “We wish him strength and a speedy recovery. We also deeply regret that players, staff members, volunteers, and supporters of both associations have been confronted with these events.”
