Residents of Xinchun Village in China’s mountainous Guizhou province have transformed a massive natural karst cave into a modern, international-standard basketball complex to protect their limited agricultural land, according to local reports.
The engineering project, located in the Bijie municipality, addresses a severe shortage of flat terrain in the region. Rather than cutting into valuable local crop fields, community members executed a multi-year excavation effort to convert the underground cavity into a hub for sports and cultural gatherings, as reported by outlets covering the initiative.

The natural karst cavity spans more than 100 meters in length and rises over 60 meters in height, according to verified regional reports. Initially, the cavern floor consisted of an uneven, rocky, and unpaved surface completely unsuited for organized athletics.
To establish a regulation playing surface, local residents engaged in a prolonged collective excavation and leveling process. Accounts from the region indicate that community workers raised portions of the cave floor by up to 8 meters to create a flat plane. Builders then installed a regulation basketball court measuring 28 meters long and 15 meters wide. Step-by-step spectator seating with a capacity of roughly 1,000 people was constructed around the perimeter, alongside a dedicated stage for community programs.
Climate Control and Acoustic Advantages
Utilizing a subterranean geological formation provides specific environmental advantages for athletes and spectators alike. According to regional coverage, the massive limestone structure maintains cooler temperatures during hot summer months while offering shelter and retaining warmth during winter.
