Shinnosuke Tokawa, a key defensive pillar for Tokyo United Basketball Club, is entering his fourth season with the team after securing a permanent transfer. The B3 league’s introduction of a playoff system has added new stakes to the campaign, with Tokyo United standing out as the only team to have participated in all four seasons of the league. The club’s defensive foundation, consistently reinforced since its inception, has remained a defining strength, even after coaching changes, with the team holding opponents to around 60 points per game this season, save for an 85‑point opening‑night loss.
Tokawa’s Fourth Season and Full Transfer to Tokyo United
Tokawa has transitioned from a loan arrangement to a permanent contract this season, marking a milestone in his career. His commitment to the club has been a constant, even as the B3 league underwent restructuring and is now part of B.ONE.
Defensive Foundation of Tokyo United in B3
From its inception, Tokyo United has built its success on a strong defensive structure, a philosophy that has endured despite changes in coaching staff. This strategy has proven effective, with the team consistently limiting opponents to around 60 points per game since the start of the season, except for the opening match, where they surrendered 85 points.
Special Game Against Tachikawa Dice: A Reunion with an Old Mentor
The October 13 match against Tachikawa Dice was a particularly meaningful contest for Tokawa, as it marked his first encounter with his former university coach, Coach Rikawa Shō, who now leads Tachikawa. Before the game, Coach Rikawa visited Tokawa, and Tokawa said he wanted to show how much he had grown.

The game, which Tokyo United won 80‑71, was a test of resilience for the team. Despite losing star forward JDL Cordilia to injury, the club managed to secure the victory by forcing 29 turnovers. Tokawa, who started the game, was tasked with guarding Tachikawa’s top scorer, Tucker Haymond, a player known for his scoring ability. “Haymond is a tough opponent with size and physicality. Our game plan was to prevent him from creating advantages, but I felt I was outmatched,” Tokawa admitted after the game.
Tokawa’s Defensive Philosophy and Team Trust
I know I need to keep working to get better,” he said.
His awareness of team dynamics, including positioning, help defense, and spacing, has made him an integral part of Tokyo United’s defensive strategy. “I think I’ve developed a good understanding of how to contribute to the team’s defense,” he added.
Offensive Versatility and Impact on the Court
While Tokawa is best known for his defensive prowess, his offensive contributions have also been valuable. On October 4, against Earth Friends Tokyo Z, he recorded 10 rebounds, and later the same day, against Bambitious Nara, he contributed 12 points.
