According to reports from Italian and international outlets, McCrystal’s movements on Tuesday, Sept. 1, were tracked through a combination of visual sightings and climber accounts. Having successfully reached the summit of the Matterhorn earlier in the day, she began her descent along the Italian route. In the afternoon, a rope team of Polish alpinists crossed paths with her below the Tyndall Peak at approximately 4,200 meters, capturing footage that later aided rescue coordinators in confirming her equipment and apparel: a light-colored or white jacket, shorts, a black helmet, and a small trail-running pack.

The final confirmed sighting occurred around 3:45 p.m. local time above the Jean-Antoine Carrel Refuge, situated at roughly 3,830 meters elevation. When an acquaintance raised the alarm after failing to establish contact over a 48-hour period, Italian mountain rescue units mobilized immediately.

Valerio Segor, director of alpine rescue for the Aosta Valley, detailed to CBC the operational difficulties encountered by rescue crews. Initial flights utilized standard rescue helicopters before transitioning to smaller aircraft capable of navigating narrow rock couloirs and approaching steep cliff faces. Despite these measures, searchers spotted no trace of the runner.

The Guardia di Finanza deployed RECCO radar equipment designed to detect reflector tags embedded in specialized outdoor gear and attempted to ping McCrystal’s mobile phone. When those attempts yielded no signal, authorities requested SIM card data from Swiss and Italian telecommunications providers to triangulate the last network connection point and narrow down the search corridor before Sunday’s final helicopter sweep concluded without result.

Rescuers noted that her white jacket created a significant visual challenge against the granite rock formations of the upper mountain. Local mountain guides operating in the area have been asked to remain vigilant for any equipment or personal items that might indicate her path.
