Newly minted World No. 4 Ben Shelton has officially withdrawn from the 2026 Laver Cup. The decision opens the door for fellow American Brandon Nakashima to make his debut at the team tournament in London.

Shelton’s withdrawal follows a grueling North American hardcourt summer swing. That stretch culminated in a run to the finals of the US Open in New York, pushing his total workload to 17 matches.
Agassi Turns to Nakashima for London Debut
The rigorous summer schedule, combined with his active participation representing the United States in the Davis Cup in Czechia this week, necessitated a late-season adjustment. In Shelton’s absence, Team World captain Andre Agassi has turned to Nakashima to fill the roster spot for the upcoming exhibition event, which runs from September 25-27 at The O2 Arena.

Nakashima enters the competition riding a wave of career-best form. The 25-year-old California native, who played one collegiate season at the University of Virginia, currently holds a career-high ranking of World No. 16.
Summer Surge Propels California Native
His summer hardcourt campaign featured deep runs at premier events. These included a trip to the final of the Canada Open—where he fell to Shelton—and a semifinal appearance at the Cincinnati Open before dropping a match to Francis Tiafoe.

Fresh Faces Join Team World Campaign
Nakashima’s inclusion provides Agassi with his third Laver Cup rookie on the roster. Alexander Bublik and Learner Tien are also scheduled to make their maiden appearances at the London venue, adding fresh faces to Team World’s campaign.
