Spanish Football Mourns as Hundreds Attend Funeral of Jesús de Miguel

Hundreds of mourners gathered in Navahermosa, Spain, to attend the funeral of Jesús de Miguel, the 30-year-old professional footballer who died earlier this week following an on-field collision. The service, held at the Pfarrei San Miguel Arcángel, drew significant figures from across Spanish football, including Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, national team coach Luis de la Fuente, and representatives from CD Tenerife and CD Castellón.

A Final Goodbye in Navahermosa

The town of Navahermosa, where de Miguel’s parents were born, declared three days of official mourning, with flags at the town hall lowered to half-mast. The turnout for the memorial service was so large that dozens of attendees were forced to remain outside the church. Teammates from CD Tenerife served as pallbearers, carrying the coffin of their late colleague.

During the service, the family shared a statement through advisor Manuel Hernández. “Jesús leaves a void that is impossible to fill, but also an immeasurable memory for all those who were lucky enough to share their lives with him,” the statement read. The family expressed gratitude for the widespread support they received, while asking for privacy to process their grief.

Football Community Offers Condolences

The Spanish football establishment was represented at the highest levels. Luis de la Fuente, recently recognized as the world’s best coach at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, spoke to the gathered crowd about the unity of the sport in the face of tragedy. “Out of pain and compassion, we convey our condolences and our respect,” de la Fuente said. “It is the best way to show that football is united.”

Rafael Louzán, president of the Spanish Football Federation, echoed these sentiments, describing the death as an “irreplaceable loss.” Louzán suggested the event should serve as a catalyst for reviewing and improving emergency medical protocols within stadiums, noting, “The football world must be united today.”

Cause of Death

De Miguel passed away on Tuesday morning at the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. The player had collapsed on the pitch during a second-division match against FC Andorra on Monday after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in stoppage time.

According to preliminary autopsy findings cited by the outlet Canarias7, the cause of death was identified as an “accidental chest injury.”

Lingering Questions on League Scheduling

The Spanish Football Federation responded to the death by canceling all scheduled cup matches. The Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) has since urged the league to go further, calling for the suspension of all professional league fixtures for the upcoming weekend. In a statement posted to social media, the union argued that the human and emotional toll of the incident made it impossible to continue with normal competition.

Because there are moments when humanity, respect, and solidarity are more important than any competition.
