The 2026 postseason picture is clarifying with three days remaining in the regular season, but three persistent questions loom over the AL side of the bracket. Essentially, we have two teams (the Astros and Rangers) battling for the final AL postseason berth, and three more (the Guardians, Red Sox and White Sox) still waiting to be seeded. With just three days remaining in the 2026 regular season, Major League Baseball’s postseason picture is rapidly clarifying across both leagues. Division titles, crucial first-round byes, and final wild-card berths remain heavily contested as teams head into the final weekend before Tuesday’s opening of the postseason.
American League Central and West Division Battles
The American League features intense divisional races with major playoff seeding implications on the line. The Guardians and White Sox both clinched playoff spots on Thursday, but the division crown still hangs in the balance. Cleveland has a one-game lead, but Chicago owns the tiebreaker between the two teams, after winning their season series, 7-6. If the teams finish with identical records, the Sox would take the division crown. Whoever wins the AL Central also is guaranteed to finish as the No. 2 AL playoff seed, getting a bye through the Wild Card Series and into the Division Series. The Guardians will win the division if they at least match the White Sox record over the final three games. The White Sox will win the division if they gain at least one game on the Guardians. On Thursday, both clubs were officially eliminated from the Wild Card race, so the division title is the only way in, with the second-place team heading home for the offseason.
Meanwhile, the AL West battle sees the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers locked in a tight race. Going into the final three games, these teams are tied in the standings, but because the Astros won the teams’ season series, 9-4, they have the inside track on what would be their eighth division title in a 10-season span. The Astros, then, just need to match the Rangers the rest of the way, while the Rangers need to pick up a game.
Wild Card Seedings and National League Standings
In the Wild Card race, the Yankees are locked in to the top AL Wild Card berth, the No. 4 seed and home field in a matchup against the No. 5 seed. That is likely to be the Red Sox, but the No. 5 and No. 6 seeds are not yet set in stone. The Red Sox, who hold the tiebreaker over the White Sox, entered Friday needing one of two things to happen in order to clinch the No. 5 seed: a win in either game of Friday’s split doubleheader against the Cubs at Fenway Park, or a White Sox loss to the Rockies. (Bad weather could complicate things in Boston this weekend, hence the Friday doubleheader.) In fact, there is only remaining scenario in which the Red Sox would not wind up in the No. 5 seed: In this instance, the AL Central title would be settled first, with the White Sox beating the Guardians via tiebreaker. Then it would come down to the Red Sox and Guardians for the No. 5 seed, with Cleveland winning that tiebreaker by virtue of having a better record within their division.
Over in the National League, the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in each league go to the division winners with the two best records. Those teams earn a bye through the wild-card round and home-field advantage in the division series. The Rays (clinched No. 1), Guardians, Brewers (clinched No. 1) and Dodgers (clinched No. 2) are in line to claim those seeds. The No. 3 seeds go to the third division winners — right now, that’s the Astros and Braves (clinched) — and those teams will host three-game wild-card series against the No. 6 seeds (which go to the third wild cards). The top wild-card teams in each league — currently, the Yankees (clinched) and the Padres — earn the No. 4 seeds and will host the No. 5 seeds (the second wild cards) in the wild-card round. The higher seed also gets home-field advantage in the championship series, once we get that far.
Current Postseason Bracket Projections
As the final weekend unfolds, the current projected matchups highlight the high stakes across baseball. The postseason action opens with three-game wild-card series scheduled from September 29 through October 1, leading directly into the Division Series beginning on October 3.
