Sonos Achieves Record 9-Game Winning Streak, KCC Dominates Samsung in KBL Action

Sonos Extend Winning Streak to Nine, Bolster Playoff Hopes

Goyang Sonos continued their remarkable run of form, securing a thrilling 90-86 overtime victory against the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus on Thursday, March 21st. The win extends Sonos’ winning streak to a league-best nine games, solidifying their position in the Korean professional basketball standings and fueling their playoff aspirations. The game, played at Goyang Sono Arena, was a back-and-forth affair that ultimately went down to the wire.

Overtime Thriller in Goyang

Sonos (26 wins, 23 losses) began their winning streak on February 14th against Hyundai Mobis, and have not looked back since. This nine-game stretch represents a novel franchise record for the club, and also marks their tenth consecutive home win. The team demonstrated resilience, overcoming a late challenge from Hyundai Mobis to secure the hard-fought victory. Hyundai Mobis, meanwhile, continues to struggle on the road, now enduring a ten-game losing streak away from home, and currently sits at 17 wins and 31 losses, in eighth place in the league.

The first half saw Sonos capture a 44-38 lead, fueled by strong performances from Nathan Knight and Kevin Cambao. However, Hyundai Mobis mounted a comeback in the third quarter, briefly taking the lead with just over two minutes remaining, thanks to a clutch three-pointer from Seo Myeongjin just before the buzzer, giving them a 64-61 advantage.

The fourth quarter was a tense affair, with neither team able to establish a significant lead. With 2:31 left in regulation, Lee Jeonghyun hit a three-pointer to bring Sonos within one point, at 76-77. In the dying seconds of the game, Nathan Knight was fouled while attempting a three-pointer, and calmly converted all three free throws to tie the score at 79-79, forcing the game into overtime.

Cambao Seals the Victory in Overtime

The overtime period was a rollercoaster of emotions, with five lead changes and three ties. It was Kevin Cambao who proved to be the difference-maker for Sonos. With 1:14 remaining, Cambao sank two free throws to give Sonos an 87-86 lead. He then added a two-point shot with 30 seconds left, extending the lead to 89-86 and effectively sealing the victory for the home side.

Key Performances Drive Sonos Success

Nathan Knight led the way for Sonos with a dominant performance, recording 32 points and 16 rebounds, a double-double that showcased his all-around ability. Kevin Cambao was equally impressive, contributing 31 points and 7 rebounds. Lee Jeonghyun also had a strong game, finishing with 14 points and 12 assists, also a double-double. For Hyundai Mobis, Rashawn Thomas led the scoring with 25 points and 6 rebounds, while Seo Myeongjin added 16 points and 7 assists, but their efforts weren’t enough to overcome Sonos’ determined play.

KCC Secure Victory, But Face Injury Concerns

In other action on March 21st, the Busan KCC Weavers defeated the Seoul Samsung Thunders 100-81. KCC (25 wins, 24 losses) snapped a three-game losing streak with the decisive victory, moving into sixth place in the standings. Samsung, however, continued to struggle, suffering their seventh consecutive defeat and remaining at the bottom of the league with a record of 13 wins and 35 losses.

Shawn Long led KCC with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Choi Junyong contributed 22 points and 5 assists, and Song Gyochang added 13 points. However, the victory was tempered by an injury to Heo Hoon, who suffered a fractured cheekbone after colliding with an opposing player in the first quarter. His absence will undoubtedly be a significant blow to KCC’s playoff hopes.

What’s Next?

Goyang Sonos will look to continue their winning ways as they prepare for their next matchup. Busan KCC will need to regroup and address the injury to Heo Hoon as they continue their push for a playoff berth. The league standings remain competitive, and every game is crucial as teams battle for position in the final stretch of the season.
