With the NBA regular season nearing its conclusion, and several teams already looking ahead to the offseason, now is an opportune moment to assess the performance of this year’s rookie class. This group has largely lived up to the considerable expectations placed upon them, and a compelling race for Rookie of the Year is unfolding, led by two former teammates.
Kon Knueppel: The Complete Shooter
Kon Knueppel, a guard for the Charlotte Hornets, is having a remarkably efficient rookie season. Averaging 19.3 points in 31.7 minutes, he shoots 48.9% from the field, 43.7% from three-point range on eight attempts per game, and 87.7% from the free-throw line, adding 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists. He has already surpassed the previous rookie record for three-pointers made, and is on pace to finish the season with over 280.
Knueppel’s offensive profile extends beyond simply being a spot-up shooter – though he excels there, ranking in the 85th percentile with 1.20 points per shot. The former Duke standout can put the ball on the floor, navigate closeouts, and create opportunities for his teammates, all while making sound decisions. Defensively, he isn’t a lockdown player, but he holds his own physically on switches and rarely finds himself out of position, a relative rarity for a first-year player.
It will be fascinating to watch his development in the coming years. He possesses the technical skills to potentially develop into the focal point of his team’s offense, but could too thrive in his current role as a key contributor alongside LaMelo Ball.
Cooper Flagg: All-Around Impact
Cooper Flagg is the other standout rookie, poised to be the cornerstone of the Dallas Mavericks’ future. In 58 games, he averages 20.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, with 1.1 steals and 0.9 blocks, while shooting around one three-pointer per game. Initially, coach Kidd experimented with playing Flagg at the point, but he’s an all-around player who is most effective when running in transition and attacking the basket.
His rebounding, particularly on the defensive end, is noteworthy, allowing him to quickly initiate the fast break. A few missed games and the challenges faced by his team this season have placed him slightly behind Knueppel in the Rookie of the Year predictions.
Other Rookies Making an Impact
Behind the two frontrunners, several other rookies are having solid seasons.
