LA PRAIRIE, QC – A remarkable showing from student-athletes in the Montérégie region highlighted the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) Montérégie badminton championships, held April 7th at Collège Jean-de-la-Mennais. A total of 20 players secured medals, signaling a strong future for badminton in the area.
Lucille-Teasdale School in Brossard was a dominant force, contributing nine medalists to the impressive haul. Andrea Chun claimed gold in the benjamin female singles competition. Rachel Huang and Kylie Wong earned a bronze medal in the benjamin female doubles, whereas Émily Lu and Yi Chen Liu struck gold in the benjamin mixed doubles. Yasmine Lekkat and Noah Clermont secured a silver medal in the cadet mixed doubles, and Dat Vothing and Michael Jiang topped the podium with a gold medal in the juvenile male doubles.
Competition in the juvenile mixed doubles was particularly fierce, with Centennial High School from Greenfield Park taking both the gold and silver medals. Michelle Ngam and Garrett Huff secured the silver, while Audrey Chen and Damien Eastwood earned the gold.
Athletes from Collège Durocher in Saint-Lambert also made their mark. Myriam Côté and Florence Bédard-Perreault captured gold in the juvenile female doubles, while Ève Ménard and Clara Coderre took home the silver. Paul Loignon demonstrated his skill, winning gold in the juvenile male singles. Estelle Chan Tecksu and Kevin Tian added to Durocher’s success with a silver medal in the benjamin mixed doubles.
The success extends beyond individual accolades. Andrea Chung, Emily Lu, Yi Chen Liu, Paul Loignon, Myriam Côté, and Dat Vothing have all qualified to represent the Montérégie region at the provincial badminton championships, scheduled to take place from April 26th to 28th in the Est-du-Québec region. The RSEQ Montérégie recently concluded its Division 3 volleyball season, with the juvenile female team from Collège Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes in Longueuil finishing as runners-up at the regional championships, held April 6th and 7th. While the volleyball results are noteworthy, the badminton championships clearly showcased the depth of athletic talent within the Montérégie region.
For those unfamiliar with the RSEQ structure, the organization manages four excellence sports – basketball (cadet and juvenile, both male and female), juvenile male football, cadet and juvenile male hockey, and female volleyball. Beyond these core sports, the RSEQ also organizes provincial championships in 12 disciplines, rotating annually to ensure representation from different regions of Quebec.
