Samen Onderweg provides sports for people with intellectual disabilities

Sport- and recreation foundation Samen Onderweg provides athletic opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities across Sneek, Heerenveen, and surrounding villages in the Netherlands. Established approximately 50 years ago on the initiative of parents, the organization operates without pretense of winning or performance pressure, focusing instead on social connection, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging for its participants.

Half a century of inclusive recreation across Friesland

The foundation originated roughly five decades ago when local parents sought reliable athletic outlets. Over the years, the program offerings expanded significantly to include badminton, swimming, bowling, and fitness. In Sneek, participants can also play football, while the Heerenveen branch features ice skating and dancing alongside indoor activities. During the summer months, the organization runs canoeing sessions for members.

Teake Leenstra, a board member for Samen Onderweg, noted that the physical health benefits of the activities are matched by the importance of social interaction. The program connects participants from various residential care facilities who might otherwise not cross paths. Approximately 100 volunteers support the foundation across its locations, ensuring that weekly sessions remain structured and accessible.

High interest drives attendance at weekly sports sessions

Interest in the foundation’s programming remains high. According to Leenstra, bowling sessions held at De Stolp in Sneek draw roughly 46 participants, occasionally resulting in a waiting list. Other events, such as Saturday swimming and evening badminton sessions at sportcentrum Schuttersveld, serve as fixed and eagerly anticipated anchors in the weekly schedules of many attendees.

Simona Blaauw, head leadership for badminton and board member who has been involved with the foundation for over three decades, observed that participants often prepare their sports shoes hours in advance of an event. She emphasized that the primary goal is mutual enjoyment, personal development, and consistent social engagement rather than athletic mastery.

Volunteers drive local sports participation

The daily operation of Samen Onderweg relies heavily on community volunteers who assist with supervision, coaching, and general organization. Fosie van der Zee-Abma, a volunteer with four years of experience who joined after retiring from home care, participates directly in activities like swimming and provides individual attention to participants who prefer a quieter pace during sessions.

Organizers stress that specialized athletic expertise is not required to volunteer. Patience, engagement, and a willingness to interact with others are the primary qualifications for individuals looking to support badminton, swimming, bowling, or other scheduled recreational gatherings in Sneek and Heerenveen.
