While the XXV Winter Olympic Games will open magnificently, people will freeze in thousands of apartments without heating and electricity in Kyiv – the consequences of Russia’s merciless bombing of Ukraine’s energy facilities cannot be avoided so quickly.
But the athletes of the aggressor country Russia and its co-runner Belarus will step in the so-called “neutral” status with the “blessing” of the International Olympic Committee in the opening parade of the Olympics.
In the fourth year of the war, it is even impolite to discuss whether sports are politics or not. There are, like many other hypocritical and duplicitous compromises with Russia dictated by indecisiveness and self-interest, which continue to take place both at the highest international level and in our daily lives. Starting from components produced in Western countries in Russian missiles and trading with the aggressor, to, for example, public transport, which connects Latvia with both Belarus and Russia, and the daily slippage of many Latvians to the Russian language “banana peels”.
Justifications are always at hand – “others trade, so we do”, “I will be fired if I don’t speak Russian with clients”, etc. But money continues to flow into Russia’s war machine, and this country uses every loophole to infiltrate and influence the so-called civilized world.
Well, this world does not know how and does not want to firmly “hold its back” against fascist Russia – every moment and along the entire perimeter. When the Latvian skeletonists demonstrated a clear position, protesting against Russia’s participation in the European Cup on January 8, together with Ukrainian and Swedish athletes, they received not support, but threats from the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation – with the police and not allowing them to participate in the competition.
We need to get out of the foul-smelling quagmire of compromises with murderous Russia – for countries, organizations, and each of us on a personal level. This is our war that must be fought and does not require blood while Ukrainians die on the battlefield. It’s the least we can do.
