Liverpool recorded a convincing victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday evening: 4-1. The last goal was scored by Ibrahima Konaté, who was visibly emotional immediately afterwards.
Last week the defender lost his father. As a result, he was not present in Liverpool’s last three matches.
Konaté shared his father’s obituary last week via Instagram. “To Allah we belong and to Allah we return,” it said, among other things.
Konaté returned to Liverpool on Saturday. He started in the starting line-up, next to Virgil van Dijk. And as if it should have been so, the Frenchman also scored.
A corner landed at his feet, after which he tapped the ball into the goal: 4-1. After cheering with his teammates and fans, Konaté burst into tears, only to be consoled by Ryan Gravenberch and Van Dijk, among others.
After the game, Konaté responded TNT Sports: “I am especially very happy. I cannot describe what is going through my mind right now.”
“The past two weeks have been very difficult for me and my family. But this is part of life. It is difficult to accept that there is no choice.”
