Djokovic had supported the student protests in his homeland last year and thus distanced himself from Vucic. A few months ago, the 24-time Grand Slam champion left his homeland and settled in Athens.
Although the 38-year-old is currently on everyone’s lips again in Serbia after reaching the final at the Australian Open, the Serbian president does not want to give in in the dispute with the tennis star. “I have him [Djokovic] I have already said my opinion, but I would like to express it more clearly given the current situation. “I will not change my mind because of any star from sports, film or entertainment,” Vucic is quoted as saying in the Serbian media “Sportklub”.
Recognition for sporting achievement
Despite the strained personal relationship, the head of state pays respect to Djokovic for his achievements. “I support Djokovic in the sporting field and everyone who wears the Serbian tricolor with all my heart. He has achieved incredible things over so many years and against Sinner he proved once again that he is the greatest in a difficult and demanding sport,” said Vucic.
However, it is more than questionable whether these words of appreciation for the sporting performance will be enough to lure Djokovic back to Serbia.
