Emil Ruusuvuori undergoes back surgery in New York

Emil Ruusuvuori’s ranking has plummeted to No. 1,078 after an absence from competitive tennis, following a first-round defeat to Francesco Maestrelli at the Bergamo Challenger in November 2025. The Finnish player, who reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 37 in 2023, has not played an official match since that tournament, leaving his current standing vulnerable to losing all remaining ATP ranking points. This Finnish player was considered one of the most promising talents among the 1999 generation, having reached two singles finals in ATP 250 tournaments and even advanced to the third round at Wimbledon, though he is now very far from the player who once competed regularly on the circuit and matched up against some of the best in the world.

Intervertebral Disc Replacement in New York

The 27-year-old underwent surgery in New York to replace an intervertebral disc, a procedure performed by Dr. Qureshi and his medical team. Sebastian Korda recommended the specialist to Ruusuvuori after undergoing a similar procedure himself. In a social media statement detailing the physical toll of the injury, Ruusuvuori said he spent ten months dealing with daily physical pain and uncertainty about his athletic future.

“During the last ten months I have lived with daily physical pain, not knowing what my back would allow me to do when I woke up,” Ruusuvuori wrote. “The mental challenge of living with pain, not being able to move or compete as I have done throughout my life, and facing the uncertainty about the future has been extremely hard.”

Mental Health Challenges Precede Physical Setbacks

The back injury is the latest disruption in a difficult multi-year stretch for the Finnish competitor. In 2024, Ruusuvuori stepped away from the ATP Tour for four and a half months due to panic attacks and mental health struggles. Although he returned to competition later that year, subsequent physical ailments disrupted his 2025 schedule, leading to a brief appearance at the US Open where he lost to Alexei Popyrin ahead of his final tournament appearance in Bergamo.

Rehabilitation Path and Protected Ranking Status

Medical professionals have not established a specific return date for Ruusuvuori, with the player focusing instead on gradual rehabilitation steps. Upon his eventual return to the professional circuit, Ruusuvuori is eligible to use a protected ranking to enter tournaments without starting from the qualifying rounds. “Now it is about taking it step by step and seeing where the rehabilitation takes me,” Ruusuvuori said.
