Casper Ruud advances as Felix Auger-Aliassime retires in Shanghai

Rafael Jodar advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai on Wednesday, overcoming Botic van de Zandschulp in a three-set battle, while Casper Ruud advanced via a walkover following an injury retirement from Félix Auger-Aliassime.

Jodar Secures Third Comeback Victory in Shanghai

Rafael Jodar extended his debut run at the Shanghai Masters by defeating Botic van de Zandschulp 6:7 (4), 6:4, 6:2 after two hours and 30 minutes of play. The 20-year-old Spaniard dropped the opening set before recovering to claim the match, marking the third round in which he has overturned a deficit to win. Ranked No. 12 in the ATP rankings and playing his first full season on the professional tour, Jodar currently sits at No. 11 in the Race to Turin, trailing tenth-placed Novak Djokovic by 131 points as he fights for a spot at the season-ending ATP Finals.

Auger-Aliassime Retires with Knee Trouble Against Ruud

Félix Auger-Aliassime was forced to retire from his fourth-round encounter against Casper Ruud while trailing 2:5 in the opening set. The Canadian, who missed the Canadian Open in Montreal earlier in the summer due to injury, experienced right knee discomfort and required on-court medical treatment before deciding he could not continue despite a protective bandage. The retirement adds to a difficult 2026 campaign for Auger-Aliassime, who is similarly attempting to secure qualification points for Turin. Ruud, who defeated Learner Tien in the previous round, advances directly to the quarterfinals to face Jodar.

Upcoming Quarterfinal Matchups in China

Tournament organizers scheduled the remaining fourth-round encounters for later on Wednesday at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center. Daniil Medvedev meets Stefanos Tsitsipas in the afternoon session, followed by Tommy Paul against Zizou Bergs, who advanced to the third round by defeating Carlos Alcaraz. Meanwhile, top seed and prospective world No. 1 Alexander Zverev prepares for his quarterfinal match against Australia’s Alex de Minaur, whom he last faced at the Laver Cup.
