[서울=뉴시스] Reporter Ha Geun-soo = The Korean women’s badminton team, led by the ‘strongest’ Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance), defeated Taiwan and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Asian Men’s and Women’s Team Championships.
Korea won the second match of Group Z of the women’s team group stage against Chinese Taipei held in Qingdao, China on the 5th (Korean time) with a set score of 4-1.
Korea, which defeated Taiwan following Singapore (5-0 win), ranked first in Group Z and advanced to the quarterfinals.
The Asian Men’s and Women’s Team Championships are national competitions held every two years, and this year, 12 countries in the men’s division and 11 countries in the women’s division participated.
Three singles matches and two doubles matches will be played to determine the winner in a best-of-five series, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarterfinals to compete for the top spot.
The best performance for the women’s division is two runner-up finishes (2020, 2022) and four semifinals (2016, 2018, 2020, 2022) for the men’s division.
If you reach the semifinals or higher in this competition, you can earn a ticket to the finals of the World Men’s Team Championship (Thomas Cup) and World Women’s Team Championship (Uber Cup), which will be held in Denmark in April.
Ahn Se-young, who took a break in the last game against Singapore, stepped up as the first runner.
Ahn Se-young won the first game of singles by defeating Chiu Pinchian 2-0 (21-10 21-13).
The pair of Baek Hana (Incheon International Airport) and Kim Hye-jeong (Samsung Life Insurance), who participated in the 2nd game of doubles, defeated Xu In-hui and Lin Ji-yoon 2-0 (21-6 21-6).
Kim Ga-eun (Samsung Life Insurance), who played the third game in singles, defeated Lin Xiangti 2-1 (13-21 21-14 21-14), confirming Korea’s victory.
The pair of Seo-jin Lee (Incheon International Airport) and Yeon-woo Lee (Samsung Life Insurance) was caught in the 4th game of doubles, but Ga-eun Park (Gimcheon City Hall) finished the game by winning the 5th game of singles.
