Always spared off the bench, the French interior managed a boss end to the match to help his franchise win at TD Garden after a close clash – never more than nine points apart – between the second in the West and the third in the East (they were still second before the match).
“Wemby” started the 4th quarter with a block against Jaylen Brown followed by a one-handed dunk. If a few bad choices followed, the tricolor prodigy made up for it as the siren approached with two shots from mid-distance, to give two points then four points in advance and validate his team’s victory at 19 seconds.
Co-top scorer for his team, he spent 26 minutes in total on the floor and scored 21 points (8/17 shooting including 1/4 three-pointers), completing his statistical sheet with six rebounds and three blocks.
A coming shock against the Thunder
De’Aaron Fox’s Spurs (21 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists) were diligent in defense, but suffered in attack from great clumsiness behind the arc (10 out of 44 at 22.7%). Former Spur Derrick White (29 points, 9 rebounds) and 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown (27 points, 8 rebounds 7 assists) hurt the Texans, the latter showing himself skillful from afar, notably with shots sent very high above Wembanyama at the start of the match.
Insufficient to defeat the French pivot and his men, who will return to the NBA floors from the night of Sunday to Monday against the Minnesota Timberwolves before a shock planned two days later against the Oklahoma City Thunder, reigning champion and number 1 in the regular season.
