Wildcard for Williams in Melbourne

At 45, Venus Williams will most likely break the record of the oldest tournament player at the upcoming Australian Open (from January 18th). The organizers awarded the final wildcard to the two-time finalist (2003, 2017), who made her Melbourne debut in 1998. “I’m really excited to be back in Australia and can’t wait to take part in this tournament in the Australian summer,” said Williams. The previous age record was held by Kimiko Date, who was 44 years old when she took part eleven years ago.
