No miracle from Union against Vincent Kompany. Bayern has redeemed its role as favorite against the Belgian champions with two goals from Harry Kane. Although one chance from Promise David will still haunt the people of Brussels. Everything will have to go well next week to end up in the top 24.
How many times would Union – and Promise David in particular – curse about that one moment in minute 29?
You knew in advance that the Belgian national champion had to hope for a miracle against Vincent Kompany’s machine. And Union almost took a step in that direction.
Because just before the half hour mark, David had a unique opportunity to put the people of Brussels ahead in Munich.
However, the Canadian striker headed a phenomenal assist from Khalaili too centrally at Neuer. Things have to be better against goalkeepers of that level.
Ten minutes earlier, Mac Allister had also come close to the opening goal, but the Argentinian was two shoe sizes short of pushing in a free kick.
The above chances show that Union was by no means crushed by Bayern. Cheers.
After a minute and a half, Kane had his first big chance, but Scherpen intervened well. And just before half time, Guerreiro headed wide again on a corner.
But apart from that, Union actually got into relatively little trouble.
No punishment
What a shame that that excellent first half was actually erased in just a few minutes after the break.
Kane was allowed to head in too easily at the near post on a corner kick. And two minutes later, Scherpen committed a penalty foul on the Englishman, who also flawlessly converted the penalty.
Suddenly 2-0 and all hope gone for Union.
Even after Bayern defender Min-Jae was sent off, the Brussels team could no longer turn the situation around. Not a shame at all, of course. We can no longer count on one hand the opponents who received a pandering from Kompany.
Union escaped such punishment.
Partly because Kane made a rare penalty miss in the final quarter after a handball from Van De Perre. And Olise also missed a huge opportunity.
So the score remained 2-0 and Bayern is certain of the top 8.
Next week in the home game, Union will need a win against Atalanta and some help from above in other matches to have a chance of reaching the top 24. David will not be there – he still picked up a yellow card and is suspended.

The replay shows that Van De Perre actually gets the ball in the arm. Enough for a penalty? Some have already been given for less.
Olise works her magic again and reaches the back line. With his low cross he wants to offer a teammate the 3-0, but Van De Perre throws himself in front of it. Chest or arm? The VAR will check that.
Poor shot
Khalaili, with the necessary portion of luck, passes his man in the center and is able to print. Not that Neuer is concerned, his place ball disappears somewhere in the stands. Union isn’t doing enough with its moments today.
