Sports Scholarships 2024: Recipients List

After evaluating 135 applications, the state sports scholarship 2025/2026. for the study year was awarded to 27 student athletes who combine high-level sports with university studies, LETA agency was informed by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM).

Scholarships have been awarded to athletes in various sports, including floorball, athletics, cross-country skiing, karate, checkers, orienteering, basketball, skeleton, biathlon and BMX cycling.

Athletes studying at Latvian universities – the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Latvian Sports Pedagogy Academy of Riga Stradins University, received support.

at the University of Business, Art and Technology “RISEBA” and Vidzeme University, as well as those who receive their education abroad.

The total allocated funding for sports scholarships amounts to 24,700 euros, which is divided into individual scholarships from 600 to 2,000 euros. The biggest scholarship – 2,000 euros – will go to water motor sportsman Nils Rets Slakteris, while 1,600 euros have been awarded to checkers player Vsevolods Mitrēvičas and 1,400 euros to karate player Beata Girvicas.

Scholarships are awarded based on the applicants’ sporting achievements and the point system established in the competition regulations. The purpose of the scholarship competition is to support young athletes so that they can successfully develop both their sports career and obtain higher education.

Financing is provided by the Ministry of Education and Culture from the state budget, but the competition is implemented by the Council of Sports Federations of Latvia.

This year, the competition has attracted a record number of applicants, which, according to the organizers, proves the growing interest of athletes in the development of a dual career – sports and education.
