Seattle – After a snow battle in Denver and a real NFL crime thriller in Seattle, there will be a new edition of a legendary title duel in the Super Bowl in two weeks: The New England Patriots meet the Seattle Seahawks. For the record participant from the Boston area, it is the first trip to the most important football game of the season since the farewell to Tom Brady, who was the quarterback in all six of the team’s triumphs.
The Seahawks are back for the first time since 2015 – when Seattle lost 24:28 against the Patriots because of a late loss of the ball through an interception, which still causes incomprehension and frustration among Seattle fans today. The year before, the Seahawks had achieved their only Super Bowl victory to date.
Duel with the Rams exciting until the last second
In front of their own fans, the Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Rams 31:27 in an exciting game and are now representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. Quarterback Sam Darnold gained 346 yards through passes and prepared three touchdowns. “It’s fascinating. It means the world to me,” said Darnold, who has never been to the Super Bowl. “This cabin, this is a special group and I wouldn’t want to do this with anyone else.”
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford also had a strong game and gained 374 yards and three touchdown passes, but in the end he didn’t have any time to make up for the deficit.
Patriots back in the Super Bowl for the first time since Brady’s departure
The San Francisco 49ers stadium will face the Patriots on February 8th (local time). New England had previously beaten the Denver Broncos 10-7 in a dramatic snow battle and qualified as representatives of the AFC. For much of the second half, the game was characterized by adverse conditions with heavy snowfall, wind and poor visibility. The Patriots decided the game with a field goal at the beginning of the third quarter – before the snow began to fall. After that, neither team scored any more points.
Only 23 years old, Drake Maye led the Patriots back to the Super Bowl in his second NFL season. “It was a task. We have to play better. I love this team,” said the quarterback. He only gained 86 yards of space with passes, but contributed 65 yards through his own runs and in this way also provided the Patriots’ only touchdown.
Patriots are record participants in the Super Bowl
New England last appeared in the Super Bowl seven years ago, when superstar quarterback Brady won his sixth title with the Patriots. With twelve participations in the most important football game of the season, the Patriots have extended their NFL record. The Broncos, among others, are tied for second place with eight Super Bowl appearances. Patriots coach Mike Vrabel now has a chance to win the Super Bowl with the Patriots as both a player and a coach. Nobody in the history of the NFL has ever achieved this with the same team.
