The Colombian government declared the upcoming Copa Sudamericana final a matter of national interest, framing the fixture as a key driver of international prestige and economic development, El Heraldo reported on Thursday, October 22, 2026.
Sports Juliana Gutiérrez Zuluaga signed Decree 1592 of 2026, officially establishing state backing for the championship match. The decisive encounter will pit Argentine side Boca Juniors against Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro on November 21, 2026, at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla.
According to government documents cited by El Heraldo, the Ministry of Sport emphasized that the tournament represents one of the continent’s premier club competitions, delivering broad international audiences and positive socioeconomic impacts for host cities. The decree notes that hosting such an international event consolidates Colombia’s global image, stimulates local economies, and fosters social well-being through sport.
Engineering Rushes and Facility Overhauls at Estadio Metropolitano
Speaking to Zona Cero, Char noted that his administration deployed seven excavators nine months ago to dig down four meters as part of a major engineering effort to overhaul the venue.

The total investment for the modernization project exceeds 172 billion Colombian pesos, generating approximately 2,500 permanent jobs over the past ten months, according to mayoral figures reported by Zona Cero. Upgrades encompass structural, technological, and functional changes designed to expand capacity to more than 65,000 spectators and enhance facilities for teams, referees, and media.
The stadium upgrades feature a renovated press box capable of accommodating 170 journalists, along with new folding seats installed across the East, North, South, and West stands. Dressing rooms now include installed showers, jacuzzis, and a warm-up area outfitted with synthetic turf.
LED Systems and Digital Screens Upgrade the Venue
The venue’s technological overhaul includes a newly tested architectural lighting system featuring over 74,000 LED lights embedded within the exterior panels. Digital programming allows the facade to project shifting colors, animations, and figures tailored to specific events.

Audiovisual improvements extend directly into the seating bowls. Crews have finished installing giant screens in the North and South stands alongside an interior perimeter LED ribbon designed to create a 360-degree visual experience. On the eastern side facing Murillo Avenue, workers completed a massive 4K digital surface measuring roughly 36 meters wide by 13 meters high, constructed from 308 individual modules equivalent to 65-inch television screens, as detailed by El Heraldo.
Zona Cero added that the venue will feature four 360-degree restaurants offering panoramic views of the pitch, alongside hospitality zones and museum spaces open seven days a week. Nine newly constructed entry tunnels display murals designed in collaboration with Junior supporters' groups to foster local stewardship of the renovated arena.

Semifinal Routes for Boca Juniors and Atlético Mineiro
Boca Juniors secured their place in the Barranquilla showcase by defeating Vasco da Gama 3-2 on aggregate, sealing their qualification with a victory at the Maracanã stadium, while Atlético Mineiro—managed by Eduardo Domínguez—advanced past Montevideo City Torque to book their ticket to the final.
The clash marks a major milestone for Colombian sports infrastructure, with Mayor Char highlighting the swift turnaround required to satisfy CONMEBOL standards. The municipal administration completed the renovation in under ten months following the venue’s closure earlier in the year.
Local promotional efforts have also embraced digital media ahead of the match. Mayor Char used social media to invite Argentine football streamer Davoo Xeneize to broadcast live from the Estadio Metropolitano, using the digital creator's millions of followers across YouTube, TikTok, and Kick to generate international attention for the Barranquilla final. Davoo, recognized as one of Latin America’s most famous football content creators, has previously interviewed world-class players such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Julián Álvarez, holding 7.2 million subscribers across four YouTube channels, 4.3 million followers on TikTok, and approximately 2.2 million followers on Kick. The political use of streamers mirrored recent presidential campaigns, such as when Colombian streamer Westcol interviewed candidate Abelardo de la Espriella, Yefferson Cossio spoke with Iván Cepeda, and Mr. Stiven connected with Paloma Valencia during the first round.
