NBA Europe Director George Aivazoglou said that European basketball can catch up with football in terms of fan interest.
“European basketball offers the biggest opportunity in the sports world, but basketball in Europe represents less than 0.5 percent of the $50 billion sports industry. I don’t think European basketball reaches the diverse and broad global audience that the NBA does.”
The NBA plans to launch its own league in Europe from October 2027 and has identified Berlin and Munich in Germany, Lyon and Paris in France, Athens in Greece, London and Manchester in England, Milan and Rome in Italy, Barcelona and Madrid in Spain and Istanbul in Türkiye as selected hubs.
Aivazoglou also stated that he will soon start intensive negotiations with stakeholders who want to offer a team in the league and said, “Among them are investors and clubs. Some of these teams are already existing basketball teams, and some are football clubs that are very interested in creating a basketball program as part of NBA Europe.”
