The ACT clubs, immersed in winter preparation, are already looking askance at the summer and one of the sections on which they focus … Their efforts are precisely in preparing the definitive calendar for the Eusko Label and Euskotren leagues. Its approval will take place at the March assembly, but the guidelines have already been defined. On the one hand, as ELCORREO announced last November, the First Division of trawlers will start this year in Madrid, specifically in a reservoir in Buitrago de Lozoya, for both boys and girls.
Since 2016, despite the attempts made by those responsible for the Association of Trainera Clubs, it has been impossible to expand the scope of the elite competition outside the Cantabrian and Atlantic Oceans. Last year the Madrid regatta was close to taking place, but technical problems in hosting the logistics that accompany the Arraunlari caravan ruined that possibility. But the door remained open. Proof of this is that the talks between both parties were resumed in August and have reached a successful conclusion.
The public company Canal de Isabel II, which is in charge of managing the integral cycle of Madrid’s water, celebrates its 175th anniversary this year and at the same time the Community of Madrid wants to promote the northern area. Both entities understand that the rowing spectacle fits perfectly with their interests, while the ACT positively values the dissemination that the event can give to its product outside its usual scope. The regatta, unless the situation changes in the coming weeks, will take place on June 28 in the time trial mode in pairs and will be broadcast by ETB, TVG and most likely also by Telemadrid.
The crews will be divided into three batches of four boats made based on the general league classification from the previous season. In the first round, therefore, in addition to the two recently promoted clubs –Santurtzi and Chapela– there will be Ondarroa and Ares. In the second, Hondarribia, Getaria, Lekittarra and San Juan will compete, while Orio, Zierbena, Donostiarra and Urdaibai will be in charge of closing the day in the men’s category. Between the first and second duo of each series there will be an interval of one minute and the crews will complete six lengths and five sloops on a regatta course that will be fifteen meters deep.
Change of dates
The clubs will be able to train on Saturday the 27th at the regatta stage although, given that the reservoir supplies water to the people of Madrid, both the teams and the rest of the personnel necessary to carry out the race must comply with a series of action guidelines. The judges and markers will use electric boats to carry out their work and the technicians will not be allowed to take the zodiacs into the water.
Clubs must also previously clean their trawlers before jumping into the water. The Basque crews already do it when they compete in Legutiano, both in boat and trainer regattas and on occasion in trawlers – some long-distance Euskadi Championships have been held. After the Madrid event there will be the Bilbao regattas, also against the clock, and Zierbena. The draft calendar has undergone slight changes in July. The CaixaBank Flag, initially scheduled for the 25th in Castro, is moved to the 11th and the one organized by Donostiarra moves to the last weekend of the month together with the Ikurriña in Getxo.
