Rafael Nadal will return to professional tennis for an exhibition match in Las Vegas on February 28, 2027, marking the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s first competitive appearance in the United States since his retirement in November 2024, BILD.de reported.
Nadal Confirms Vegas Return, Hints at Federer Showdown
In an interview with the Associated Press, Rafael Nadal revealed he has been in frequent contact with his long-time rival, Roger Federer, about the possibility of a reunion match. Nadal did not confirm whether Federer, 45, will join him in Las Vegas for the “MGM Slam” event at the T-Mobile Arena.
“We talk almost every week and communicate very often,” Nadal said of Federer, according to the AP. “If we ever find the right occasion and the right place to put something together, you will know. But I don’t know yet.”
A Rivalry Renewed in Sin City
During their storied careers, Nadal and Federer faced each other 40 times, with Nadal holding a 24-16 advantage in their head-to-head meetings. Their rivalry defined an era of men’s tennis, with their most famous encounters coming in Grand Slam finals, including a five-set classic at the 2008 Wimbledon final.
Off the court, the two have developed a close friendship in recent years. Their last public meeting was a 2020 exhibition match in Cape Town, South Africa, which drew nearly 52,000 spectators, a record for a tennis exhibition.

A Look Back: Bernabéu Rumors and Nadal’s Academy
While the Las Vegas event remains the focus, rumors have previously circulated about a potential showdown at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid. Nadal was recently appointed to the board of Real Madrid, and a match there could see the duo break their own attendance record. The Bernabéu, home to one of the world’s most famous football clubs, has a capacity of over 81,000, far exceeding the Cape Town crowd.
In early October, he participated in the 10th-anniversary celebration of his own tennis academy, sharing the court with former rival Andy Murray.
What’s Next for Nadal
The Las Vegas appearance is the first confirmed event on Nadal’s post-retirement schedule in the United States.
