Kruzbergs: Silver at European Short Track Championship

Latvian athlete Roberts Krūzbergs won a silver medal in the European short track championship in the Netherlands on Saturday in the distance of 1500 meters.

On Friday, Kruzbergs was first in his skating in the quarter-finals, Reinis Bērzins was second in another group, both reaching the semi-finals. On Saturday, in the semi-finals, Kruzbergs was second in his skating and entered the A final, while Bērziņš received a penalty and ended the competition.

In the A final, Kruzberg was at the bottom of the group at the beginning, but four laps before the finish he started to overtake the athletes in front on the inside. At the finish, only the three-time European champion of this distance, the Dutchman Jens van’t Vout, was ahead of him.

Kreuzberg was 0.115 seconds behind the winner and beat Italy’s Tomas Nadalini by 0.195 seconds. This is Kruzberg’s first career medal at the European Championships.

On Sunday, the competition will start from 11.30 a.m. They will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the International Skating Union (ISU).

Last year, the best result among Latvian short-track athletes was achieved by Bērziņš, who took fourth place in the 500-meter distance, while Krūzbergs ranked sixth in the 1500-meter distance.

The European Championship will end on Sunday.
