Issa Sy: Algeria-Nigeria CAN 2025 Referee Profile

A very high stakes match. Senegalese referee Issa Sy was chosen by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to be on the whistle for the CAN 2025 quarter-final between Algeria and Nigeria, this Saturday (5 p.m.).

International referee, who notably refereed a Club World Cup match, Issa Sy has already refereed two matches in this African Cup of Nations in Morocco. Two group matches: Egypt-Zimbabwe (2-1) on December 22 and Zambia-Morocco (0-3) on December 29.

This is not the first time that he will referee Algeria or Nigeria at the CAN. In 2024, he had been on the whistle once for each of the two teams: in the groups for Algeria-Angola (1-1) and in the quarters, already, for Nigeria against Angola. This was successful for the Super Eagles, who qualified.

Issa Sy will be assisted by his compatriots Djibril Camara and Noha Bangoura, and by the Kenyan Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot. Peter Waweru Kamaku (Kenya) will be 4th referee. The Gabonese Pierre Ghislain Atcho, the Kenyan Stephen Onyango Yuembe and the Eswatinian Letticia Antonella Viana will officiate the video.
