Hugo Broos is not expected to go on vacation to Morocco anytime soon. The South African coach sharply criticized the atmosphere during the CAN, following which the South African sports minister publicly recalibrated him.
Clearly, after the open conflict between Marc Brys and Cameroon, here is a second Belgian who is attracting criticism on the African continent. This time Hugo Broos, coach of South Africa, was reframed by his sports minister following comments made at a press conference about the organization of the CAN.
As a reminder, Broos had pointed the finger at the security of the tournament, saying that his wife “was scared” during the Egypt – South Africa match after thousands of people rushed to the stadium, the organizing committee having decided to distribute free tickets.
The South African coach was also denounced for the “lack of atmosphere”, according to him, of the Moroccan CAN, “not comparable to the African Cups of Nations in Gabon or Ivory Coast”. Comments which earned him criticism.

Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s sports minister, did not appreciate these comments from his coach. “I was very annoyed by the Bafana Bafana coach, very annoyed. You can’t go to a country and insult its inhabitants! Mr Broos was still at the hotel, how can he judge the atmosphere of the CAN?” he asks. in remarks relayed by Sowetan.
“We were in the streets, we saw the atmosphere. I want to apologize to the Moroccans for what Mr Broos said,” concludes McKenzie. “It was the best CAN in history, I assure you. Morocco proved that Africa was ready to host an international event.”
