The Towers have four home games left to celebrate at least one victory in the Eurocup. However, all five previous duels were lost against their first opponent Venice. But Hamburg manages to pull off a surprise.
Hamburg (dpa/lno) – Three days after their success over Ulm in the BBL, the basketball players from Veolia Towers Hamburg followed up in the Eurocup and ended two negative series. After 14 defeats this season, head coach Benka Barloschky’s selection surprisingly won 95:87 (54:44) against play-off candidate Umana Reyer Venice. The Hanseatic League celebrated its first victory ever in front of 909 spectators in the Inselpark Arena in what is now the sixth duel with the Italians in this competition. Despite the surprising success, the Towers remain at the bottom of Group A.
Overall, Hamburg proved to be the more effective team in the first half. After Venice’s 12:10 lead, the Towers turned the narrow deficit into a 21:14 lead. When the guests had drawn level again after around six and a half minutes in the second quarter with a long-range throw from Denzel Valentine to make it 42:42 and the game seemed to be tipping over, Ross Williams again initiated his team’s 12:2 run with a three-pointer to make the score 54:44 at halftime.
After the break there was hardly anything to be seen offensively from the Hanseatic League. Venice dominated the third quarter and tied the score at 64:64. But the 17th place in the table, which is now much more solid, also suffered this setback. the BBL away and celebrated the deserved victory after a strong final section.
