Marcus Danielson first arrived at Djurgården in 2018 from Gif Sundsvall and spent two seasons at the club before being sold to Chinese side Dalian Professional.
2.5 years later, the defender returned for a second stay in 2022 and spent another four seasons at the club. After Danielson’s contract expired at the turn of the year, it is now clear that the 36-year-old is leaving Dif.
– After a long period of consideration, I have decided that I am leaving Djurgården. It has been a very difficult decision to make, which has taken some time. But at the end of the day I feel it’s right for me to move on, even though it’s been an emotionally tough few days since I made the decision,” he told the club’s website, continuing:
– I have experienced an incredible amount during my years in Djurgården, significantly more than I could have dreamed of when I signed up at the beginning of 2018. There are an incredible number of wonderful and unforgettable memories that I will always carry with me and I am very proud to have experienced all of that at DIF.
The 36-year-old says in his farewell that nothing is yet clear regarding his future – but that he will not play for a club in Sweden that is not Djurgården.
Djurgården sports director Bosse Andersson comments on Danielson’s resignation:
– We have had a dialogue during the autumn and Marcus has had the opportunity to remain in Djurgården. But he has been clear that he wants to try a football adventure, which may be the last contract of his career.
– So Marcus has had all doors open and we have had a discussion for some time now. When we then sat down this weekend, Marcus had arrived at a decision, where he wants to try a new opportunity in a new environment. There are no hard feelings in this, but we go our separate ways on good terms.
Throughout the year, Marcus Danielson has played 202 competitive matches for Djurgården, where the SM gold with the club in 2019 and the cup gold in 2018 stand out in terms of merit.
