Barcelona Scout Watches Sporting CP Defender Iván Fresneda in Champions League
FC Barcelona intensified its pursuit of Sporting CP right-back Iván Fresneda by deploying an observer to the José Alvalade stadium, SPORT reported. The 22-year-old Spaniard started under manager Rui Borges during a 3-2 defeat against Austrian side LASK Linz in the Champions League on Wednesday, October 21. Barcelona’s sporting department evaluated the defender’s physical capacity, pace, and flank coverage on the ground as the club weighs potential reinforcements for the January transfer market.
Prior Pursuit and Evolution in Portugal
Barcelona’s interest in the defender dates back to the summer of 2023, when the club studied his transfer while he still played for Real Valladolid. At just 18 years old at the time, club officials halted the operation because they felt he required more experience before stepping into such a demanding role. Fresneda ultimately moved to Portugal instead. According to reporting from El Gol Digital, Sporting CP paid Valladolid 9 million euros fixed plus three in variables and agreed to a contract until 2028, while the club also reserved a 10 percent future sale clause.
Three years later, Fresneda’s stature in European football has shifted significantly.

Spain Call-Up Boosts Fresneda's Visibility and Valuation
Fresneda’s profile received an additional boost following a senior team call-up from Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente. Selected to cover for the injured Pedro Porro during UEFA Nations League duty against Croatia, the young defender occupied a spot on the bench for La Roja, elevating his visibility in the international showcase. That exposure aligns with a strong contractual standing in Lisbon. El Gol Digital reported that Fresneda has a contract until 2028 with an 80 million euro release clause, while the Portuguese club works to expand the link and improve his conditions while maintaining that same 80 million euro valuation.
Securing Fresneda in the winter window remains a complex financial puzzle for Barcelona. The Catalan club is evaluating multiple scenarios to bolster its flanks, but any incoming transfer depends entirely on clearing out squad space and generating necessary economic margin through departures in January. While no formal negotiations have opened between the clubs, the presence of a Barcelona scout in Lisbon confirms that the sporting direction’s long-standing interest, first sparked during his days at Valladolid, remains active.
