Aston Villa has catapulted itself back into title contention. The Villans had a meager 1 in 6, but were allowed to celebrate in Newcastle thanks to a bomb from Buendia. Watkins even doubled the score in the end. Yet there were concerns: Tielemans was injured after an operation on his ankle.

If Aston Villa’s title dream suffered a dent in recent weeks, they revived it with a bang today.

Signed: Emiliano Buendia. After 19 minutes, the Argentine set up an excellent combination with Onana and Tielemans, among others, and then rammed the ball into the far top corner from about 20 meters.

A cannonball of wonderful manufacture. The usually so loud St. James’ Park also had to swallow.

Especially because that 0-1 had completely kicked the home team’s blitz start into oblivion. If only Tonali had finished that giant chance after just 37 seconds.

Even then it became clear that it would be an enjoyable viewing.

Put a damper on the festive spirit

Villa took complete control after the 0-1 and a splitting pass from Tielemans almost made it 0-2 before half time. Maatsen was just too late to rush towards the goal.

However, Newcastle remains a team that you are never done with. Onana had to take out his seven-league boots shortly after the break to whistle back the broken Wissa and a shot from Barnes almost fluttered in via Tielemans’ elbow.

Phew. There was some relief for the visitors – and it became even greater when Barnes pushed a bouncing ball over a half-empty goal moments later. Villa played with fire, but in the end did not get burned.

What’s more: thanks to a header from Watkins in the final minutes, the visitors ultimately recorded a 0-2 victory.

Although there was another important casualty. Youri Tielemans had to leave fifteen minutes before the end after major surgery on his ankle. Let’s hope that the damage to the Red Devil is not too bad.

A good victory still had a small dark side. But Villa is once again fully involved in the title battle: it is once again next to City in 2nd place.

Strange incident

Last Thursday things were a bit lopsided between Emery and Tielemans. During a late substitution, the Red Devil received a push from his coach. Afterwards, Emery covered the moment with the cloak of love and today Tielemans is back in the starting line-up, just like Amadou Onana.
