Anthony Joshua Car Crash: Driver Faces Charges

Two of former boxing world champion Anthony Joshua’s trainers die in a car accident in Nigeria, and he himself is slightly injured. Now the driver has to answer in court. He apparently didn’t have a valid driver’s license.

After the serious car accident in which the British boxing star Anthony Joshua was slightly injured and two of his friends were killed, the driver of the accident car has to answer in court. The 46-year-old man was charged with four counts: dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, careless and careless driving causing bodily harm and damage to property and driving without a valid national driving license.

Former heavyweight world champion Joshua was traveling with his friends Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele and the driver on a busy highway in Nigeria between Lagos and Ibadan on Monday when their SUV collided with a stationary truck. According to local authorities, one of the vehicle’s tires burst, which then crashed into the stationary truck at high speed.

Ghami was also Joshua’s strength coach and Ayodele his personal trainer. Both died at the scene of the accident. Joshua was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was released on Wednesday.

Driver is due in court on January 20th

The driver can now be released on bail of five million naira (around 3,000 euros) and two sureties. A police spokesman told the AFP news agency that he will remain in custody until these requirements are met. In any case, he will have to appear in court on January 20th. The driver is said to have rejected the allegations and pointed to defective brakes.

Joshua, who grew up in Great Britain as the son of Nigerian immigrants, was on his way from the economic metropolis of Lagos to visit his mother in the city of Sagamu at the time of the accident. Joshua’s promoter said in the middle of the week that he wanted to stay in Nigeria for a few more days.

A statement from the regional government authorities on Wednesday said: “Anthony and his mother were at the funeral home in Lagos this afternoon to pay their last respects to his two deceased friends while they were being prepared for their scheduled repatriation.”
