Simon Mignolet, Toby Alderweireld and Hans Vanaken, the last three winners of the Golden Shoe, looked ahead in the HLN podcast to the gala which will take place on Sunday. They also mention the existence – or not – of a financial incentive linked to this reward in their contract.
Lucrative bonuses have become an integral part of modern football. Clubs often link them to performances, such as goals, assists or clean sheets, but also to individual awards such as the Golden Boot.
Hans Vanaken and Simon Mignolet confirm in the football podcast HLN that an additional bonus is provided for in their contract in the event of winning this prestigious trophy.
Vanaken and Mignolet thus received a bonus
“When I came back from England, it was a real source of motivation for me,” explains Mignolet. “Especially as a goalkeeper. To be able to win it… it was a challenge. On the one hand the bonus, on the other hand the fact of actually being able to win it.”
Mignolet won the Golden Shoe in 2022, while Vanaken has won it three times: 2018, 2019 and 2024. For both players, this bonus therefore constituted additional motivation, in addition to their sporting ambition.
Toby Alderweireld, winner in 2023, on the other hand, deliberately chose not to include a bonus in his contract at Antwerp. “I think it’s not necessary. I would never think about it,” said the defender.
